Biography

O‘ktam Usmonov's aforementioned novel was awarded the Oybek Prize of the Writers' Union of Uzbekistan.

Although the talented writer and journalist O‘ktam Usmonov lived a short life, he was an artist who left behind a wonderful novel like «Girdob», which deserves a place in our literary treasury.

He was born in 1938 in the village of Baytqo‘rg‘on, Qibray District, Tashkent Region, into a gardener's family.

After finishing secondary school, he entered and studied at the Tashkent Pedagogical Institute.

After successfully graduating, he first worked for republican newspapers. From 1972 to 1982, he served in responsible positions at the Central Committee of the Republican Party, then worked as a secretary at the Writers' Union of Uzbekistan and as editor-in-chief of the «O‘zbekiston ovozi» (Voice of Uzbekistan) newspaper.

The writer passed away on January 3, 1990.

The writer's career began in the late 50s and early 60s.

Activities

O‘ktam Usmonov's first collection of stories was published in 1964 under the title «Guldasta» (Bouquet). Following this, in 1965, his stories «Bahs boylashgan bola» (The Boy Who Made a Bet) were published, and in 1970, his stories «Bahor chaqmoqlari» (Spring Lightning) and his first novella were published. Later, the writer's collections of stories such as «Notinch kecha» (Restless Night, 1976) and «Sirli sohil» (Mysterious Shore, 1981) were presented to the reader. In these stories, the writer's reflections on man and humanity are summarized through diverse characters and life details.

As a novella writer, he also created a number of serious works such as «Bahor chaqmoqlari», «Kishan» (Shackles), and «Qismat» (Fate). The latter two works were well-received by literary critics. In the work of O‘ktam Usmonov, the novel «Girdob» (1979) occupies a special place. In it, the struggle between justice and injustice, and loyalty and betrayal, is depicted with great skill.
